Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson at the food court. And if you're wondering what a food court is, you're definitely watching the right video because it's the first English term that I want to teach you today. A food court is a place with lots of restaurants and seating, usually found in a mall, in an airport, and sometimes in an office building. So if you're hungry while you're shopping or at the airport or at work, you can go to the food court to get some food and you can sit down to eat it. In this English lesson, I will teach you some English words and phrases that we use when we're at the food court.
Before we continue, though, I do want to thank Preply, the sponsor of this video. If you're looking for someone to help you improve your English conversation skills, Preply is a great place to find someone to help you do just that. And if you use the link in the description below today, you'll get 50% off your first lesson. So I have to be kind of sneaky now because there's a lot of people looking at me funny for making a video in the food court. But I did want to review six phrases you can use if you order food at the food court. I'm going to read them from my list so I get them right.
Let's say you wanted a donut. You could say, could I have a donut? You could say, can I have a donut? You could say, could I get a donut? You could say, can I get a donut? You could say, I'd like a donut. Or you could say, I'll have a donut. So if you walked up to a restaurant like Tim Hortons and you wanted a donut, those are the six phrases you could use. And of course, you could use them if you're ordering a sub or a hamburger or anything else. So let's talk about some of the types of food that are available at this food court.
This first place sells what's called a pretzel. Pretzels are made of dough, and they usually have lots of salt on them, and they're really good with mustard. This next restaurant sells Thai food. Thai food is very yummy as well. In fact, it's one of my favourite kinds of food to get when I'm at the food court. And then I would say this next restaurant is a typical burger and fries restaurant. If you're familiar with North American cuisine, especially fast food cuisine, you'll know that burgers and fries are often on the menu.
They are often things people buy when they're at a food court. And then we have two classic restaurants in North America, Taco Bell and KFC. Taco Bell sells what I would call Mexican food, although it's very much made, I think, in a way that appeals to the average consumer. And then KFC, of course, sells deep fried chicken. And then lastly on this side we have Subway, a place that sells what's called a sub. A sub is basically a bun made, like bread, with meat and different vegetables on it. And then of course, we have what's considered a classic in Canada, Tim Hortons, which you
would call a coffee shop or a cafe. When you go to a Tim Hortons, you can buy things like a cup of coffee, a cup of tea, you can get a donut, you can get a bagel, and sometimes you can even get a croissant. And I apologize to all of my French speaking viewers, yes, we do say croissant in Canadian, English. So Tim Hortons, a cafe. So we do have a version of Chinese food in Canada. Again, I wouldn't call it authentic. I would say that most of the food that we eat that originates from other countries has been changed slightly to appeal to the North American palate. That means it appeals to the,
flavors that we like slightly. It's still very much, based on the original Chinese food. But here we have a Chinese food restaurant. And then here we have what I would consider something new in Canada in the last 10 years. And it's a place that sells what's called shawarma. And it's very, very yummy and very, very popular right now. And then we have just a classic fry shop. So a place that just sells french fries called New York Fries. If you really like deep fried potatoes, this would be the place to come and get them. So New York fries sells french fries primarily. So as I mentioned earlier, a food court has restauran restaurants around the perimeter, and in
the center there is a place to sit. There are tables and chairs, and we usually call this the seating area. So you'll go to the restaurant, you'll look at the menu, which is the list of food items that you can order and that you can then later eat. And once your order is ready, you can go to the seating area and find a, table and chairs where you can sit to eat it. Before we move on with the lesson, I do want to once again thank Preply, the sponsor of this video. There are so many different reasons for learning English, and Preply has tutors for every single reason.
Maybe you're learning English because you're going to visit an English speaking country. Maybe you're going to end up in a food court and you're going to have English conversations with the people you are visiting in that country. Preply is a great place to find a tutor to help you improve your English for travel. Maybe you're going to be studying in an English speaking country. Maybe you're going to be taking an English test in the near future. Preply has a tutor that can help you prepare for both of those situations. When you go to Preply, you can indicate why you
are learning English and Preply will help you find a tutor that will help you with your specific need. And I'm not just someone saying Preply is good because I really appreciate them sponsoring the video. I actually used Preply in the past when I was improving my French. It was so easy for me to find tutors who could help me with my specific needs for learning that language. So if you want to improve your English, if you want to find an English tutor that can help you and with your specific needs, please use the link in the description below today and you'll get 50% off your first lesson. And again, I honestly think Preply is one of the best
places to find a tutor to help you improve your English. So there's probably three really common phrases that a worker at a restaurant in a food court will say. The first one would probably just be next please, where they're basically saying, whoever's next in line, come up and order your food. And then the most common one I think is, what can I get for you today? That's basically what the worker says. Sorry, it's a little distracting walking and talking. That's basically what the worker says when they want to know what you want to order. And then probably the next most common
is when they tell you the total. They'll usually say that comes to $11 or that comes to $5, after which you will pay. So often when you're at a food court, you're there with someone else. And here are some common English phrases you might use as you're talking to each other. The first one is you might just say, what are you getting? Maybe you're in line and it's almost time to order and you don't know what to get. And you might say to the person you're with, what are you getting? Because maybe you want to get the same thing. And then that person might reply
and say, I can't decide. It's quite often true when you're ordering food that you're not sure what you want. And then you say, I can't decide. And it gets a little bit stressful as you get closer to the front of the line. Sometimes when two people are in line, one person tells the other person what they want, and then they might say, I'll grab a table. They might go to the seating area and grab a table while the other person orders the food.
The person who is grabbing a table might look and see a spot or two open, and they might say to someone, is this seat taken? This is a very common question and a very polite question to ask when you're trying to find a place to sit. And then when you're sitting down and maybe you're waiting for your friend, you would be saving seats. You are saving that seat for your friend. Or if there's more than one friend, you're saving seats for the two people that are going to arrive. So when you're at the food court with other
people, those are some very common English phrases that you might say to each other. So behind me, there's an area that's called a tray station. And at this particular food court, when you are done eating, you bring your tray, which is what you use to carry your food, and all of your garbage and recycling to the tray station. When you bring it to the tray station, a person will actually sort everything into the proper containers. They'll take out the garbage, the compost, and anything that can be recycled. And then they will put the tray on a stack so that it can go and be washed. So a few vocabulary words and phrases there.
A tray station. A tray which you use to carry your food. You have garbage and recycling. And when you bring it to the tray station, they will sort it so everything goes in the right bin. So this next section shows that I'm getting old because I wanted to talk about condiments. Ketchup and relish and mustard and all of the things that North Americans put on their hamburgers and their fries. Condiments used to be free. There used to be a condiment station, but this is no longer the case.
I think people were using too much. And so now when you order food, they will give you your condiments on the tray. If you order a hamburger, it might have ketchup, relish, and mustard on it, or they might actually give you condiments in little packages. So condiments, all of those things that you add to food to make it taste better. The normal ones in North America would be ketchup, mustard, relish, mayo, which is short for mayonnaise. But now there are so many different condiments, I can't even keep track. So condiments, things you add to food to
make them taste a little bit better. So you might be wondering, how do you pay for your food? Well, there are three common ways to pay for food here at this food court. The first would be to use your bank card. I'm not going to show you mine. Let me cover it up and just show you a little bit of it. You can use your bank card to tap, or you can even insert it into a machine and punch in your pin.
You can also use a gift card. And I can show you that if you have a gift card, you can spend that gift card at a restaurant. And it works just like money. But probably the most common way to pay right now is to use your phone. And we usually, at least I usually say tap. I usually bring up my bank card on the screen and I tap my phone on the little machine and I use that to pay for my food. So one of the unique things about Canada is that we call our bathrooms washrooms. It's kind of an interesting term. We sometimes call them restrooms as well. But, that is the most common term in Canada to say washroom. So when you're done eating, maybe you need to go
to the washroom, maybe you need to go to the bathroom, maybe you need to go to the restroom. We have one of those in almost every single food courtroom. Well, thank you so much for watching this English lesson at the food court. I hope you were able to learn some new English words and phrases that you can use in your next English conversation.
