Hello everybody. It's Arian Laginga and welcome back to my YouTube channel. Today we are in the Windy City in Chicago and today we are celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Look at the beautiful green river behind me. They dyed this river green this morning. It used to be blue, but now it's green. The first vocabulary word is dye. This means to change the color of something using a liquid or a substance. And we can use this word in four different ways. With your hair, clothes, food, or in this instance, the Chicago River. For example, they dyed the river green this morning. I dyed my hair last week. In
the 1960s, it was super common to tie dye your shirts. We dyed the frosting on the cake red. Now, if you're writing this word or spelling it, try not to confuse it with the word dye, which means to stop living. Use the correct word dye, which means to change colors. For example, you wouldn't say, "I dyed my hair." You would say, "I dyed my hair with a Y. Right now, the river looks like a giant green highlighter. It's honestly one of the coolest traditions in the US. A tradition is something a group of people have done for a long time. So, this city has been dying the river green for more
than 60 years. And why green? Well, green is the color of Ireland, and over 400,000 people come to Chicago to see this. Now, what is St. Patrick's Day? St. Patrick's Day celebrates the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. This was originally a religious holiday, but now it celebrates Irish culture all around the world. In many cities, people celebrate with parades, music, Irish food, green clothing, and decorations. Chicago actually has one of the most famous celebrations in the world, including the Chicago St. Patrick's Day parade.
Lauren, how do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? I just like to have fun and like I go over the top. You know, my great grandma was from Ireland and my great grandpa. I don't know if this is how they would like to celebrate it, but I'm definitely having a good time. Hi, Ellen. How are you celebrating St. Patty's Day? I just ate like 30 Tostito pizza rolls and they were delicious. And I'm out with my friends, all my girlfriends here and we were out on a trolley earlier and it's a good time. A lot of people come here during St. Patrick's Day to be on the river. They have kayaks, canoes, so you can really enjoy the Green River. One fun activity you can do this St. Patrick's Day is go
on a boat ride in Chicago. It costs around $45 per person, but you'll have amazing views of the city, the architecture, and the Green River. Today, people are dressed in the color green. But why green? There's actually a funny reason for this. In American culture, if you don't wear green on St. Patrick's Day, you get pinched. Yes, pinched. Basically, when you pinch someone, you grip their skin with your thumb and your index finger. But since I'm not wearing green today, I might get pinched.
Ouch. That's why almost everyone today is dressed in green shirts, green hats, green beads, and sometimes even green hair. Why do we do this? Well, it comes from a bit of folklore stories that are passed down through generations. The legend says that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns. Invisible means you cannot be seen. If a leprechaun can see you, he might pinch you. So, people started pinching each other as a playful reminder to wear green. So the leprechauns wouldn't get them. Why do people wear green? Like you're all dressed up in green. Your hair is that your real hair? No. I This is You know, I just wanted to like just live, laugh, love, have a good time.
Well, I mean, I got these overalls at Goodwill. But I got this from Bar Stool. I go to Daden. We do this theme where it's like 40s at 4:00 a.m. when we uh do St. Patty's Day. I got this from a bar like years ago. But well, no, no, no, no. One of these I got from the parade. The other one I lost, but this one I'm staying at my friend's girlfriend's place and like let me have this for free. So, I'm definitely in the holiday mood. Can you tell me a little bit more about what you're wearing? Sure. I have a top hat from Amazon, jacket from Amazon, fake blouse from Amazon, some extra large pants from Amazon, and then a Seline purse and a Chanel [snorts] necklace.
Not from Amazon. Do you believe in leprechauns? Do you think they're real? 100%. I am a leprechaun. So, I believe that they're real. I met a guy from Ireland. He was from Charlie and now he lives in Cork, Ireland. And I asked him about the leprechaun thing. You know, I think it's just a thing where if a husband doesn't come home, they just blame it on the leprechaun. You know what? The leprechaun did XYZ and that's why I didn't come home like to take care of the kids or something. What is a leprechaun? A leprechaun is a small creature. They're usually shown as little men with red beards and green hats who are very sneaky or tricky.
According to the legend, leprechauns hide their gold at the end of a rainbow. So, if you follow a rainbow, you might find a pot of gold. Have any of you ever tried to find the end of a rainbow? It's impossible. That's why the gold is so safe. What are some of the famous symbols for St. Patty's Day? A shamrock. uh fourleaf clover, which are probably the same thing, and a Guinness beer. And what are some of the symbols of St. Patrick's Day? Uh well, we got our clover. Usually another symbol of some dude uh pass out on the street.
Do you know any Irish words or sayings? Uh kiss my ars or pub mahon. Do you know any Irish expressions or what do they like normally say during this holiday? Okay, so like my mom would be like sit down before I knock it on. I know that's like not okay now, but you know, it was effective. Do you know any Irish slang or any words? Oh, hell no. I'm not even from here, actually. Yeah, Ohio, actually. Many people during St. Patrick's Day drink. Yes, they drink a lot. I'm sure in Ireland, that's where the tradition comes from. And here they are starting
their morning drinking. Sam, how are you celebrating St. Patrick's Day so far? Going to 8 am to Meyer, getting some Jim Beam, putting in like a Speedway uh cup. Going down here, having a good old time. Seeing everyone enjoying the view, the happiness, the enjoyment we get around, seeing all these like empty Borgs everywhere on the street fills me with so much joy. Wow, what a day.
