Hello everybody. Welcome back to my YouTube channel. My name is Arianita Lagringa and in today's video we will talk about different religions in English and we will go to places like a Catholic church, an evangelist church, a mosque, a Hindu temple, a synagogue, all in Cincinnati, Ohio. Now we're going to start this video with the most common religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. It's Catholicism. and I'm going to visit a cathedral right behind me. This cathedral is called Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and Chains and it's huge. Let's go inside and visit it. Before walking inside this cathedral, I want to teach you what it means to be Catholic. If you're a Catholic, that means you
believe in Christianity. The Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world and it believes on the teachings of Jesus Christ. I just walked inside the cathedral. But what is the difference between a cathedral and a church? Well, a cathedral is a special kind of church. It's a big important church that's the home base for a bishop. Now, a church is any kind of building used for Christian worship. It can be big, small, plain, or fancy. And you might be wondering what is a bishop? Well, within the Catholic Church there is a hierarchy and at the bottom of the hierarchy is the priest. The priest is the leader of the church. He is responsible for leading services and administering sacraments like baptism
and communion. And above the priest is the bishop. He is the boss of the dascese. Bishops are in charge of churches, priests and clergy within their dascese. Now above the bishop is the archbishop and they oversee everyone in the arch dascese. And above the archbishops is the pope and there is only one pope and he is the leader of the Catholic church. I'm inside the cathedral and it's big and beautiful. And what do people do when they come to the cathedral? Well, they come here to worship and they have mass. Mass is the way Catholics worship. It's a way to remember the last supper where they remember Jesus sharing bread and wine with his friends and family before he died. Mass is celebrated every Sunday,
but they do have mass during the week. During mass, you will listen to readings from the Bible and also sing songs. This is a book and it's full of songs that you can sing during mass. Then a homaly or sermon will be given by the priest who will be standing up here. And then after that part, we will say the Our Father or the Lord's Prayer. Then those who attend mass will receive communion, which is bread and wine. When you receive communion, you will stand up from the church bench and then you will wait in line and then the priest will give you the bread or the host. You can receive bread with your hands and then put it in your mouth or you can receive bread just by your mouth. And then after
you receive bread and you eat it, then you will go over here, make your way around the church bench and walk back to where you were. Normally after you get bread, you will kneel. Right now I am kneeling and then you will pray. Now you might be wondering how does the church make money? Well during the mass there is an offering or collection where people can give money in these baskets. There will be many people moving around this basket down each aisle. That way, people can make their donations. You can give any type of donation like cash or a check. And this will help support the church.
Hi, Father. What does a priest do during mass? priest during mass leads the community in worship, represents the presence of Jesus, the head of the church. He preaches the gospel and he confesss the eukarist. So changes the bread and wine that's brought forward into the body and blood of Jesus through the words of Jesus at the last supper. That's in a nutshell what a priest does at mass. And then how can someone become a priest? You're called by Christ. So Jesus calls certain men to himself to become part of his ministry as high priest. Besides leading mass, what do priests do on a day-to-day basis?
You're meeting with people on a one-on-one basis, maybe doing marriage preparation, maybe doing some grief or bereavement counseling if they've had a loss in the family, possibly celebrating a baptism or a funeral, or anointing somebody who is sick in their home or nursing home or care center or hospital. hearing confessions and any number of just random encounters that the Holy Spirit leads you into to engage other people in the world and hopefully witness to them the love of God. So that's what a priest hopefully is doing on a daily basis. Great. Well, thank you so much.
You're welcome. Now I'm outside the cathedral. And what are some of the holidays people celebrate if you are Catholic? Well, people celebrate Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. People also celebrate Easter which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now let's move on to the next religion. The next religion is evangelicalism. It's the second largest Christian denomination in the world and a common evangelist church is called Crossroads and this is located here in Cincinnati, Ohio. Crossroads is an evangelical church and it's known for its contemporary worship style. Let's try to
enter the church. Right now I'm inside Crossroads Church and it's a lot bigger compared to other churches. And in this church you can find the student section where they have student meetings in there. They also have a coffee section where you can grab a cup of coffee and it's completely free. And then they also have more meeting rooms. They have a kids club. And then over there they even have a chapel and they worship in here in the auditorium. In the Catholic church the pope is the leader. But in the evangelical church there isn't one single leader. There are different pastors or ministers who are the leaders within the church. Next is celibacy.
Celibacy is required if you are a priest, bishop, archbishop, or pope in the Catholic church. That means you cannot get married or have kids. But in the evangelical church, you can get married and have kids. Many pastors and ministers are actually married and do have kids. Right now, I'm inside the auditorium, and it's huge. It looks like a concert auditorium because there are so many seats. This is where evangelicals will celebrate mass. Well, actually they don't use the term mass. They call it a worship service. So every Sunday you go to a Sunday service or during the week you go to a worship service. Now I'm on the second floor of the auditorium. And over here you can
see the stage and that's where the band will play and you can sing songs, you can worship here. You will have ministers or pastors preaching and you can even give money and offer donations. One difference I see between the Catholic church and evangelist church is that this church doesn't have church benches. So when you come here to worship, you can sit down in a comfortable chair. Hi Victor, what does a pastor or minister do during a worship service? The role of a pastor is usually to welcome the people that are coming to the church. So just to teach people concepts about the Bible and church and just to really the intent is to get people a little bit closer to God. And
what is the biggest difference between Catholics and evangelicals? This is a complicated question and we're not going to go into all the details. For the most part, they're actually a lot of similarities in the sense that technically both Catholics, evangelicals are under the Christian religion that believe in Jesus. But within that there's different principles, doctrines that tradition I would say mostly that are different. So, for example, in a Catholic church, which I grew up in a Catholic church, you will go to mass. Then you will have to confess your sins in a little cube and tell the priest what you did wrong, and then they'll guide you through the process of asking
for forgiveness. In evangelical church, for example, there's still the concept of forgiveness, but usually instead of having to go through priest, you'll do that directly with God. And that's a one small example, but there's many more. The way that the priest or the pastor dresses, like I'm a pastor, and I dress a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. You know a priest you'll see them usually with a white robe leading the procession. Pastors can get married and you know have a family priest usually cannot. So those are some differences. Again there's many more but I would say those are some of the high level ones.
Thank you. And then how can someone become a pastor or minister? I would say two things. There's like the technical this is what they need to do. A big thing would be a deep conviction that they believe in this thing religion you know faith and then committing to learning more so they can guide other people in that process. But then on the technical side then people that are willing and committed to uphold the Christian faith values. People that are willing to live what the Bible says that we should do. So those I would say are some of the things but again like the previous question different denominations, different groups could
have specific requirements that might not apply to somebody else. Thank you so much. Yeah, you're welcome. Right now I'm outside the evangelist church called Crossroads and now I want to teach you about the different holidays people celebrate. Well, since they are a large Christian denomination in the world, they celebrate the same holidays as Catholics, Christmas, Easter, and Lent. We just talked about Catholicism and evangelicalism. And you might be thinking, can I talk about religions, traditions, or other topics in detail? Now that we've talked about communicating clearly, let's explore the next religion. Now we are going to learn about Islam. I am in front of a mosque. But first off, what is Islam? Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity. And if you follow Islam, that means you are Muslim. And what is a mosque? Well, this beautiful mosque behind me is where Muslims go to pray.
Think of it like a church for Christians. And today I changed my clothes because I will go inside the mosque and I will see their place of worship and where they pray. So to be respectful of the religion, I have to wear long sleeves, so a jacket and pants as well to respect this religion. So now let's go inside and see how Muslims pray. When you enter the mosque, you will go into a prayer hall and worship and pray. But if you're a male, you'll enter this prayer hall. You'll go through these doors. And these doors are just for men. But if you were a woman, then you will go inside this prayer hall. Men and women are separated and they have their own rooms to pray. Right now, I'm inside the mosque. And behind me, there is a
sign that says, "No shoes beyond this point." There are some shoes on the ground and you have to take off your shoes before going inside and praying. So that is the main prayer hall for men and you can go inside this room and put your shoes on a rack and also wash up. Hi, why is Friday special for Muslims? Friday is a special day for us. It's kind of like similar to Sunday for Christian and Saturday the Sabbath for Jews. But in our religion and the prophetat wasam that means God's peace upon him said that Adam which was the first man was sent down to earth from heaven on a Friday and also the day of judgment will be on a Friday. And what does the imam do during prayer?
Imam in Arabic means like in front. So the imam is in front of everyone and he's basically the leader. He recites the holy book. The Quran is the book of God who he sent to man and then everyone behind him follows along. How many times do Muslims pray every day? Minimum five and there's no maximum. How can someone become a Muslim? To enter Islam, you have to say a testimony of faith. The testimony of faith in English means there is nothing and no one worthy of worship except God Almighty. And Muhammad, may God's peace and blessings be upon him is the messenger and slave of that almighty God. Then you become Muslim. So I would consider Islam to be the only truly monotheistic religion in the sense that
it is pure monotheism. So yes, we have Christianity who associates Jesus peace be upon him and the Holy Spirit with God and typically says that they are all one triune God called the Trinity. But Islam, we reject the notion that God or Allah, the God who created everything has any partners. So we worship God alone. We follow his commands. And this is the truth that Muslims are upon. So we invite everyone to learn more. When I first came to Islam, I had like some negative views about it, but we invite everyone to do their research because you don't want to trust every source. You have to get the information yourself. And the Quran was sent as a guidance to mankind. And if you follow the guidance that God sent, he would
tell you that you should wash up five times a day before you pray. So we have to wash our hands and our face and many body parts in our religion. This keeps us safe from harm and also it allows us to have a spiritual connection with our creator that cures all diseases. Now before moving on to the next religion, I want to show you guys the holy book of Islam, the Quran. So it's the holy book of Islam. It's basically like their Bible. Now let's move on to the next religion. Now let's talk about the next religion, Hinduism. Hinduism is one of the world's oldest and largest religions. It started thousands of years ago in the Indian subcontinent. Right now I'm in front of a Hindu temple called the Hindu Temple
of Greater Cincinnati. A temple is a place where Hindus come to pray, meditate and celebrate festivals. And here we are going to learn more about Hinduism. People who follow Hinduism are called Hindus. And this religion is different from many others because there's not one book they follow or one founder. For example, in Catholicism, people believe in one God and in Islam, they believe in Allah. Instead, people follow different traditions, stories, and these are passed down over time. And today, I'm not alone. I'm with my friend Harita. She's Hindu, and she's going to show me around the Hindu temple. But first, we have to take off our shoes. So, we'll just leave them outside to go inside the temple. Inside the temple,
you'll see beautiful statues called idols. These represent gods and goddesses like Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Right now we're inside the Hindu temple. Harita, is this your place of worship? And what do you normally do when you do worship? Yes, I go to the temple to worship and I come to the temple whenever I want to or when there are special holidays. Like a couple of weeks ago, Dvali was happening. A lot of the time families come to the temple to celebrate Diwali and pray and do ceremonies called pujas at the temple. Dvali is kind of the equivalent of Christmas for Christians or people who celebrate that holiday. Dvali is a celebration of light winning over darkness and Hindus all come together to
celebrate this once a year. It's full of fireworks, sweets, special foods and pujas at the temple. And then I also noticed that you guys believe in karma and reincarnation. Do you believe in that? I think it's difficult to say as I'm young and I'm still trying to explore what I believe. I think for Hindus and for other religions, it depends on how committed you are to your faith and whether it's something more cultural where you celebrate the holidays and the ceremonies with your family and friends or whether it's something that you're studying and looking to get deeper into.
I think for me because I'm young, I'm still learning more about it and haven't fully formed my opinions on those things. I know you guys believe in many different gods. What one god do you mostly believe in? Yeah, just tell me more about it. So, in Hinduism, there are many gods, but I think families or individuals are drawn to particular gods. I'm from South India and specifically the Tamil speaking region. So my family really likes Ganesh also known as the elephant god. But yeah, every person has something that they pray to and some gods more than others. Thank you so much. Of course. Right now in the Hindu temple there is a priest educating many people about Hinduism. So he's just talking about the many gods, their traditions
and beliefs. After you do a ceremony at the Hindu temple, the priest will bless the baskets full of fruit and then he will hand them out to you. Right now I'm in front of a synagogue. This is a synagogue and it's a place of worship for Jewish people. And what is Judaism? Judaism is one of the world's oldest religions. And who is the leader of a synagogue? Well, a leader is called a rabbi and they are the ones who will lead prayers and read the Torah. Also, every Friday evening, Jewish people celebrate Shabbat. People will refrain from doing certain activities like cooking, doing chores around the house,
or using electricity since this is a day of rest and prayer. Now, let's go check out what's inside the synagogue and how people worship. Hi, Rabbi Goodman. What do rabbis normally do during a service? We help to lead the prayers. We give a sermon talking about some of the things that are going on in the week and as they relate to the Torah, our holy book. And why is Shabbat important to Jewish people? Shabbat is given to the Jewish people as a day of rest. It's understood as a gift to the world that for six days that we really work and we toil and then on the seventh day we rest and we rejuvenate and spend time with the ones we love.
And when is your day of worship? The way that Jews relate to time is that a day begins when the sun goes down. So when the sun goes down on a Friday night, we have worship services Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. And Shabbat lasts from sundown from Friday to sundown on Saturday. So with holidays, what do you guys normally do during Hanukkah? Hanukkah is actually kind of a small holiday for us, but it's culturally very big and so we celebrate light. We have hanakas or manoras that we light candles. There's lots of songs and we eat a lot of foods that have oil and our
little ones get to open presents which is the game. Can you explain to me a little bit about the book you're holding in your hand? Sure. So, this is a book of the Torah. The Torah is the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. So, that's Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. And it is really the central text of the Jewish people. We read from a little Torah every Shabbat. Now, let's move on and learn something new about a different religion. And the very last religion I will cover in this video is Buddhism. Buddhism is one of the world's oldest religions and it originated in India. And if you believe
in Buddhism, that means you are a Buddhist. And a Buddhist temple is a place for worship, meditation, and studying Buddha's teachings. Unlike some religions, Buddhism doesn't focus on worshiping a god. This is Buddha, and he is the founder of Buddhism. And if you practice Buddhism, you mostly focus on meditation. Right now, Buddha looks like he's about to meditate. I rang the doorbell and I tried opening the door, but unfortunately, this Buddhist temple is closed, but normally inside the temple, you will focus on practicing meditation and mindfulness and trying to get a clear mind. Monks and nuns dedicate their lives to studying and teaching the dharma, which is basically Buddha's teachings. Okay, everybody,
this is the final part of the video. I visited a Catholic church, an evangelist church, a mosque, a Hindu temple, a synagogue, and a Buddhist temple. All in my city, Cincinnati, Ohio. As you can see, there's many places to practice a religion in Cincinnati. But what happens if you don't believe in a religion or in a god? Well, that means you might be an atheist. So, people who are atheists do not believe in a god or in a religion. I hope you all enjoyed this video and the people that are interviewed and also let me know down below your religion and if you would like to add any points that I missed throughout this video because I will be reading the comments. Go ahead and give me a like and subscribe and
I'll see you guys next week. Bye.
