Our first guest tonight is an Emmy nominated actor and a six season sneller with a personality that illuminates everything in her path. Her new movie is the action comedy Balls Up. It's on Prime Video now. Please welcome Molly Shannon. OH MY GOD. HI. IT'S VERY NICE TO have you here. How are you? Oh my gosh. Good. It's so nice to see you. It's nice to see you. Have you ever been to the old spaghetti factory? Yes. We got a couple of waiters from the place there. Yeah. Are you kidding? I used to work there. You did too? Yeah. What? I was a waitress there.
Yes. They are waiters at the old spaghetti factory. Are you kidding me? Holy moly. What? Do you know what I did once? It was so unprofessional. Go ahead. I did like the job because it was such a big restaurant and you have to run all over with giant plates and but once there were all these it was packed and I saw a rat and I made such a big deal. I WAS LIKE IT'S A RAT AND I TOLD THE WHOLE RESTAURANT and they're like screaming and I threw my dishes and the managers were like Molly next time you see a rat cannot make such a scene.
Is that terrible funny? Well, they now they call the rat the vuvius. I'm sure there are no rats anymore. I'm sure they've cleaned all of those out. YOU KNOW, AS RESTAURANTS get older, they get cleaner in general, right? Of course. Wow. So, did you work as a waitress a lot? Was that something you did regularly? I did. I was a hostess at Cravings for years and I worked at Mel Roses. Yeah. Cravings on Sunset. I was a hostess and then I worked at Melon Rose Melrose Baking Company, Horn and Hard Hat Dino Mat. I worked all Did you wait on Famous People?
Yes. Who? Well, when I was a hostess, Jennifer Anderson came in, your friend, and she so lovely. It was before I knew her to cravings. Okay. and she was like beautiful and I was just studying her for my hostess booth and she had like long gorgeous hair and she was having like preparing a lunch with her agents and she got there early to check the table and I was like studying what it's like to be a superstar. I was like wow like Jennifer Anderson means business and she had crystal blue eyes and it was before she was on Friends and I really did. I was like wow this girl is extreme she is going to she's going to go to big
things. You got that sense even before you knew who she was from TV? Yes. Well, she was doing a lot of she was booked always booking pilots at that time, so I knew who she was, but it was prefriend. But I was like, "Wow, she is a hustler." Like, "This girl is good." And um Yeah. And I just I studied her and it was great. I was so impressed with her business savvy. Sure. Yeah. Getting to the restaurant early and checking out the table. And then Julia Roberts used to come in too for breakfast and I was like, "Oo, it's Julia Roberts." I've told the story before, but she just ordered sausage.
And I was like, that's so interesting. Sausage. Just sausage. Yeah, just sausage. I was like, maybe she ALREADY HAD BREAKFAST BEFORE. I HAD like a lot of thoughts like just sausage. I was like, interesting. Superstars eat sausage. Maybe she only eats sausage. Maybe that's all she eats. Maybe that is just how she stays so lovely all the time. Exactly. Just protein, no carbs. Yeah. You uh do you go back to New York? Like, does 30 rock much? Do you go back there at all and say hello to the old gang?
I do. I love going back and I go to the parties and I see Lauren for dinner all the time. I'm still so close to him and yes, I love going back. So, if I'm in town, I'll go see a show or go to the afterparty and my daughter goes to school in New York City. So, I'm always visiting. But yeah, I was there a couple months ago and um I was actually right by 30 Rock, but I was like in a hurry and I was I had to run somewhere and I stopped to get a carrot juice and a fan came over to me and she was like, I'm such a fan of yours. And I was like, "Oh my gosh, thank you." I was like, "I wish I could talk longer, but I have I'm in a hurry. I have to go somewhere." And I was like, and she goes, "You don't
know. Your performances have meant so much to me." And I go, "That is so sweet." I was like, "Thank you. You made my day." And she was like, and then I had to walk away. And then I turned around and looked at her and waved and she stopped on the sidewalk and she was like, "I don't believe you." She said, she said she didn't believe me when I said that she that when I said, "You made my day." And I was like, "Oh god." But then I thought I was like, "Maybe she really didn't make my day." You know what I mean? Like Well, mine after that she didn't. Yeah. The truth is I was like, God, maybe she's right. Maybe I'm just a big phony.
Wow. No. Isn't that funny? That is interesting. Yeah. Wait, I want to say one thing. It's weird that she would say that. Yeah. People say we're get nervous and they say suspicious. It was like Yeah. She was like where's the camera? Like this. She was like, I don't believe you. Like she cast a spell on me. I was like, "She's right." No, I want to do this interview a part one and part two.
Oh, okay. Part one is going to be the giggles WITH MY JACKET. AND part two, I'm going to take the jacket OFF TO SHOW MY like an award show. There costume one. We're in part one right now. THIS IS PART ONE. Should we I don't know. And you can pick which one you like better. Okay. I give you permission. Okay. Great. All right. So, well, maybe we should take I feel like maybe we should take a break right now then and then come back and we get to we'll have part two of the interview the conclusion part two of our interview
of our two-part interview with Molly Shannon continues after this. We'll be right back. May I uh suggest a change of clothes? Maybe a wet suit. Let Elijah finish, please. I relate to what you're saying because I myself have often felt a man's balls lightly tapping me from behind like pieces of warm dog dangling in a plastic poo bag. It's unnerving and disgusting. That is unnerving. Sorry. Is Steve from HR here? I didn't invite him. Gh. The fun police. Uh, actually, I'm here. Is Molly Channing balls up with Paul Walkerhouser and Mark Wahberg.
Abey. Abear playing the HR. Oh, is that right? Oh, family member. Yes. Of the Fairies. Yes. Of And directed by the great Oscar winning Peter Fairley. Yes. That's fun, huh? Yes. It seems like a fun like it was a fun set. Oh, the most fun to go out for dinner. More fun than any of the other sets you've ever been on. You like these people better than your other set? No, I like them all. Pete Fairley just makes it so fun. Same with Bobby Fairley. I mean, they're like the greatest. I've known them for years and I've shot with them and Mark Wahberg's great.
Did you work out with Mark? No, but he does a cold plunge early in the morning, like 3:00 a.m. Gets up, eats his protein and a and I mean really just so disciplined. He's very inspiring. So, I got a cold plunge after working with Mark Wahberg. Yes. Because I was like, "Oh my god, I love how disciplined." Always knows his lines really well. And so, Abe Fairley and I would always be like, "We want to be like Mark Wahlberg." So, yes. So, now so I did a cold once before I came here today. Do you like it? Do you use it right now? I love it every day. It's so good. It makes you really relaxed and it seems terrible. It's cuz it's cold.
Yeah, it's so cold. And my wife wants one and I've been very resistant to getting one because she insists that I heat the pool to 90°. She's like me. And I say, "How about this? I'll continue to not heat the pool and you just go in that." That is so cool. But apparently that's in the mid range that she does not want to be in temperature wise. Yeah, she wants it either freezing or boiling and nothing in the middle. That is so funny. The exact same way. Yes, I recommend it cuz you could go hot to cold, hot to cold. It really helps you sleep. You get exhausted at night. I
think it's great for your nervous system being a mom. I highly recommend it. You will use it every day really. And kids love it. Like my kids and all their friends are always at the house and they go from the sauna to the jacuzzi to the cold buns and they're like THIS IS FIRE. LIKE THEY LOVE IT. YEAH. It's fun because you want the kids at your house, you know. Yeah. You are uh doing a TV show next with Will Ferrell, correct? Yes. I'm doing a show called The Hawk. That's going to be on Netflix. I'm so excited. Netflix show. He plays a golfer, right?
He plays a golfer. Wait, I'm going to take my jacket off now for part two. Oh, right. We've got part two. I forgot. It's part two cuz I couldn't Thank you. Cuz I couldn't go without the jacket. You know what? I'M GOING TO TAKE IF I SHOULD TAKE ONE OF MY SHOES OFF. OKAY. I love it. These are your shoes. Well, this is one of them. The other one, it's almost identical. The other one I you know, not a lot of creativity when it comes to shoes.
You met Did you meet Will at Saturday Night Live? We met. We had I years ago I worked as at a coffee place, Melanrose Baking Company, like a cappuccino scone place. And a comedian from the Groundlings, Patricia Carter, said, she goes, "Molly, I really want you to meet this really funny guy from the Groundlings named Will Ferrell." So, she brought him into the restaurant, Melon Rose Baking Company, and I waited him and we clicked right away and I was like, "Can I take your order? It's so nice to meet you, Will." And he said, "I will have a scone." And so, I brought him a scone and a latte. And we've been friends ever since. 30 years.
Wow. Connection over there. Have you ever seen the real the serious side of Will because he's seems always he's always pretty upbeat. Yeah. He is always upbeat and he's so genuine and very intelligent like you, a deep thinker. But one night, one night when we were at SNL, we had just started and I was so excited like, "Oh my god, this job's so great." And Will was kind of dark and he was like, "I don't know. Who knows how long this is going to last?" And I really don't think this was 30 years ago. He goes, "I really don't think I don't know. I just think it's so it's not going to last
long and I think actors are eventually going to be replaced by robots and it's not gonna they're not going to need human actors anymore. And I was like, "What are you crazy?" Like I was like, "You're being so dark." And he was like, "No, I really think they're not going to they're it's going to we're going to be replaced by robots. They won't need humans." And I thought he was crazy. And he said, "But you know, it would be fine because I could have a job working as a dog groomer or as a UPS driver or as a coach and still be happy." And I was like, "Okay." But we went down like a dark street. But Will was right. And we die laughing about it now. We're like, "God, we want bad news from him about the UPS
driver. That's going to be a robot situation, too. He can probably groom dogs, but I feel like they're going to figure out dog grooming robots before they figure any of the other stuff out. really what's left for him. I know. Yeah. Wow. He's like Nostradamus. Well, did he have any other predictions that you can share? No. That was the only one. But we laugh about it so much cuz I go, you said that we Who knew Will Ferrell was some kind of a dark lord. You're so funny. I think he's coming on in a couple weeks. We're going to have to interrogate him about see if he has any other things to tell us.
Yeah, exactly. Well, it's great to see you. Congratulations on the movie and the show. The movie is called Balls Up. It's on Prime Video now. MOLLY SHANNON, EVERYBODY, we'll be back with more.
