And now to the gubanatorial debate. The candidates who want to run California clashed on stage tonight. They gathered in Monterey Park for a debate hosted by CNN, battling to break through with voters who are already receiving their ballots. CBS LA political reporter Tom Wait is here. And Tom, the candidates are doing their best to reach the undecided voters, right? Because that's the super important pool at this point. And like you said, with ballots already in voters hands, time is of the essence, right? So there were some feisty exchanges as the candidates tried to land blows and stand out as Rud Bay was saying their mission to reach the relatively large pool of undecided voters.
I said it prevents criminals. Don't fly for me. Unleashed California's gubanatorial candidates did not hold back. Trump sucks. At East Los Angeles College Tuesday night, the top polling candidates went at it for two hours in a testy faceoff on CNN. I've got two words for you. Tom Styer. Under Tommy Styer, the taxes will be higher. At times, tensions boiled over. Oathkeeper mission statement. And the I saw them on CNN attacking the capital and the ACLU. I saw politician molesting kids. Does that mean you molest kids?
What? On immigration policies, a clear divide between the Democrats and Republicans. I think we should police Donald Trump's masked mercenary force that they call ICE. The governor of California should hold people accountable who break the laws of California, specifically including ICE agents. No one has broken the law in California. And this is why we fight in the streets and people are out rioting, burning down Los Angeles because politicians like this sit and lie to everyone. It's the job of the governor to protect every single Californian. Period. There are no qualifications on that. Are you doing that? Are you doing that by having a sanctuary state policy?
Absolutely not. Democrat Javier Bera rising in recent polls was a frequent target. Being in bed with oil companies is a mistake. Javier Bera has taken the max amount of money from Chevron. It's a rich response from a guy who made his billions investing in fossil fuels, in oil camp companies, in coal companies. You keep referencing your experience as your main qualification, but what have those 30 years of experience gotten us? Americans. No, hold on. Let me finish.
Little agreement on how to tackle the economy and cost of living. California's problems have been long running. We don't need more career politicians supported by the insiders in Sacramento. It's not Donald Trump who's given us gas prices $2 higher than the rest of the country. It's Democrat policies which Antonia and all the Democrats here support. We over rely on the upper income tax. That's why you have feast and famine virtually every year. Election day is technically June 2nd, but as we've been talking about, since voters already have their ballots, every day right now is essentially election day. Remember, the top two vote getters in the June primary go on to the
November general election. Rud Bay Tom, thank you. Want more on the candidates? Check out our interactive guide. Pick a candidate and an issue that matters to you, and you can hear their exact position. You can also compare the candidates side by side. Find it at cbsnews.com/ca gov.
