Hi everybody, it's me Sally back at Crumbs and Doilies. Now, last time I was here, I was making a jelly cake and you guys really liked it. Thanks for watching. If you haven't seen it, then make sure you go and check that video out after this. Um, and when I made that cake, I asked you if there was other kind of cakes you want to see, like the decoration style of it rather than the kind of baking side of it. And loads of you mentioned labu. And now I'm a bit behind on the times, but I know what labu is. Um, if you don't, then just have a little Google. They're like these kind of weird cute, slightly evil looking collectible items. They come in a blind box, so you never know what

you're going to get. Uh, and they're dead cute. So, I thought we'd make a cake version of it today. Um, so what I've already done is I've made my cake. So, I've just got a three layer cake here that I just filled as usual. And then I've trimmed it down to the kind of, if I do this, the shape of the leu head. Super easy, just with a knife. But what I'm actually going to do is flip this up because I want it to be standing up rather than flat. So, what I've got is a fresh board here. I'm just going to pop a little bit of icing in the middle. So, I've just had it in the freezer to set hard. And I'm going to slide this pallet knife underneath just to release it like that. And now I'm going to flip it in my hand

like so. And then we're going to pick it up and we're going to pop it in the middle of our new cake board and just give it a little shimmy and a little squish. But now obviously the back is naked. So I'm just going to pop a little bit of icing on this and then we'll get it back in the fridge. Okay. So, just like a little crumb coat. Doesn't need to be too neat or anything. And then I'm just going to pop this back into the fridge. And whilst that's chilling in the fridge, I'm going to get on with making the like features of the laboo. Um, I

don't know why I said it like that. Sorry. So, I'm going to make all of them out of modeling paste. So, what I've done is I've drawn the little Laboo face just so I have a bit of an idea of how big I need to make all the features before putting it on the cake. So, I just sort of made this, stuck it on the cake, made sure I was happy with it, and now we're going to get going. So, modeling paste, as always, is really nice and firm. So, it's not going to it's not like sugar paste, which is what you use to cover the cakes. This is a lot firmer, which means we're not going to kind of accidentally manipulate it. It's going to dry really nice and firm. And as always with modeling paste

or sugar paste, you want to give it a bit of a warm up, a bit of a knead because it will be kind of a bit dry like this. And then as soon as you need it, you get a beautiful smooth consistency. And with modeling paste also, it might be really rock hard when you get it out the packet. Pop it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time and it gets nice and smooth and soft. This brand is called Serccino. It's my personal favorite. I think it's really nice to work with and it tastes good as well. So now I've got this piece of skin lovely and smooth. We're going to start making our face. To start with, I'm rolling out my sugar paste to about 5 mm thickness. And then I'm going to use my sketch as a template to cut out the face

using a scalpel or you could use a sharp knife. Whenever I cut modeling paste, I always neaten off the edges. Just trimming off the frills and then using my finger to just smooth off the sharpness. For the eyes, I'm starting with the white. And I'm again cutting them out, making sure they fit the face before I smooth them off. And then I can move on to adding the black pupils. For the little white details in the eyes, I actually make tiny little balls and then I flatten them between my fingers rather than trying to cut out tiny little circles with a cutter or a knife. This is just so much easier. And to stick it all together, I just use a little bit of edible glue. You could use

some water, just not too much. The nose is super simple to mold just by hand and normally it's the same color as the labu which is pretty cute. Laboo have cute pink rosy cheeks. So before I stick the eyes and the nose on, I'm just going to simply grab a fluffy brush and some pink luster dust and basically just put some blusher on her face. I'm adding some black detailing to the top of the eyes just to emphasize my Lab Boooo's little frown. And to do this, I just want to roll a strip of black modeling paste. The easiest way to do this is to just roll it between your fingers and the board. Now, you want to do this little by little, just gently stretching it as you roll. If you go too

quick or you apply too much pressure, the sausage will be all kind of wobbly and it might snap as well. The mouth is exactly the same technique. And then once this is stuck on, I can cut the teeth out. And I actually find this easiest to use a really firm piece of modeling paste. That way the teeth are going to stay really nice and sharp and I'm not going to kind of manipulate them and make them look flat. And now I can move on to the ears. Now these need to stand upright. So I'm keeping the modeling paste thicker about 1 cm thick. And then once I've cut them and smoothed the edges off, I'm actually just going to insert a skewer all the way through the middle attaching it with a little bit of edible glue. And this is

just going to give them a bit more stability. And all that's left to do is just add a little bit of blue detail to the middle of the ears. Okay, so the labu face is made. Um, cute but creepy, right? I kind of like them. So, first one, I'm going to stick it onto the cake, which is nice and firm now. It's been in the fridge. So, just you're going to use a little bit of fresh buttercream. Spread that on the front. Again, it doesn't need to be neat because it's all going to get covered up. And now, because we use the modeling paste, the face is really nice and firm straight away. If we had sugar paste,

we'd want to leave it to set a little bit longer so we don't ruin it. And I'm just going to pop this little face on. Just make sure it's kind of in the middle of the cake. Cute. I love it already. So, we did a little bit of uh googling about what Laboo we should do. And we chose this one because it's part of the macaron collection, and we love a macaron. And this one is called sea salt coconut as the faces. Oh, I'm not going to put the ears on yet. We're going to actually pipe the fur around the head first. So, into a piping bag fitted with a grass nozzle. So, that's one that looks like this, and it's got all these tiny little holes in it. So, into there,

we're going to put some of our buttercream. And I'm only going to put a little bit of buttercream in at a time because we're going to do a lot of squeezing. And my hand is going to warm this buttercream up quite quickly. Um, and as once we once it warms, it will get looser and it's going to get harder to pipe. So, just work with a little bit at a time. And so, we start. What we're going to do is we're going to pop the nozzle right up against the cake. We're going to squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. We're going to pull forwards. And then we're going to release as we pull away. It looks a little bit weird right now, but once it's all in there, it's going to look dead cute. It's one of those

things that's going to take a long time, but patience is key here. Otherwise, it'll just look a bit rubbish. We're so close. We just need to put the ears on and then do a little bit more piping. That did take a long time, but like I said, if you don't do it slowly, it looks really rubbish. So, the ears are going to go on, I reckon, about here and here. I'm just going to push them right down. Right into the buttercream like this. Cute. But now I just need to make them fluffy. So, let's get piping again.

I love it. It's so sweet and it's so simple but so effective. Maybe you'll try this at home, maybe you won't. But loads of people love labuoo. So now you can make a laboo cake for whoever you want.
