Come on! [Cheers and applause] That's sick. -It's insane. -Talk to me. I mean, you love -- I know for a fact you love Elton John. Them together, Brandi Carlile is, she's brilliant. -Brandi Carlile is incredible. -Brilliant. Together it's gonna be -- -She's got pipes for days. Elton John, legend. -And you hosted the show 20 years ago. -Dude, I -- the first time I hosted, 'cause I've hosted thrice -- I don't want to toot my own horn -- thrice!
Uh, I remember it was like 25 years ago, and I think the musical guest was The Strokes. You remember? And do you remember like, one of the first times we ever met, you were opening for The Strokes, right? And we had -- -I remember this. I remember -- it was my favorite thing 'cause we were opening for The Strokes and I was singing "Do They Know It's Christmas?" -Yes! -And I don't even know if it was around Christmas time. But you were in the audience and I saw you, go, dude, we're doing "Do They Know it's Christmas?" if you want to get on stage. And you jumped on stage and crushed it.
-Yeah. -Roseland Ballroom, I think it was. -Yeah. -And it was great. And you killed it. That was 25 years ago! -We go way back to the beginning of entertainment, you and I, because -- we've been jamming and rocking in a comedic way since like the '99s. -Yes. I remember seeing you at Apple Pen years ago. Yeah. And I was like, dude, "I'm the biggest fan of Tenacious D, I love you." And you were just crushing it.
I this is -- God, that's 30 years ago. -Yeah. -But dude, look at you now, buddy. Come on. You're crushing it. -Look at you now! Look at both of us. -[Cheers and applause] -Come on! "A Minecraft Movie." -And I still don't have a belt. -"A Minecraft" -- -Minecraft, yes! -Minecraft, one of my favorite video games out there. I do love it. I think it's very apropos that you're doing "A Minecraft Movie," because I think your career started as a video game commercial.
-It did. -If I'm correct. -My first job was, yeah, for a game called "Pitfall" on Atari. -Atari 2600. -The very first video game. -Great game. -For a home system, yeah, the home system Atari, and it was like a jungle themed video game, and the graphics were breakthrough at the time. It was like, "Whoa, there's an actual person!" And of course, it's super primitive. -Yeah, and the vine is going back.
You have to jump on the vine. But you were -- -Yeah, it was super fun. -You were Pitfall Harry. -That's right. "Just last night, I was lost in a jungle with Pitfall Harry!" -No, we actually, we have that commercial. Here's 13-year-old Jack Black in his very first acting role. Check this out. -Just last night, I was lost in the jungle with Pitfall Harry, surrounded by giant scorpions and man-eating crocodiles.
-"Pitfall" for the Atari 2600 and in television. -Is that rad? -What happened? Yeah. -Is that not the best thing I've ever seen? That's so cool. -Yeah. Yeah. Come on, look at your headshot here. You're just 13. -You got my headshot? -Yeah, I got nothing but your headshots, man. -You know what you don't have, though? I had a headshot where, on the back, it showed activities that I could do if needed.
Like, I had me eating cereal and me riding a skateboard and me riding a unicycle. -Oh! But look at this other -- from my Jack Black headshot collection. -Oh, you got my stud muffin look. - -Yeah. -Oh, what's he all about? -Well -- -He's mysterious. -That was back in the day. That was around the time that "The Outsiders" came out. Remember that movie? -Oh, yeah.
-And every young actor's dream was to be in, like, an "Outsiders"-type movie, where you were kind of cool from the wrong side of the tracks. Maybe you were in a gang, in a cool way. -That's you. -That's what I was going for. -Yeah, this is not bad! But here we are -- "Minecraft Movie." You, Jason Momoa. Man, it's fun! My daughters all have friends. They have dates this weekend. They're all going on April 4th.
They're all going out to theaters. It's a big deal in our school. -Nice! Every kid is going to see "Minecraft." I'm so excited about this. I love that game. -Yeah. -I think it's fun. I think it's creative. It's good. Do your boys still play Minecraft? No. -Yeah. No, they were onto Minecraft like ten years ago, way before the movie was even talked about. And I learned how to play Minecraft just 'cause I wanted to speak their language.
-Ah! -And, um, it's hard, man. It took me -- like, I'm a gamer and it still took me a few days before I could crack the code. It was like ten YouTube video tutorials before I knew what the hell I was doing. But it's -- -I still don't know. -But it's about building. It's kind of like LEGO, where you build structures and you mine for materials and, yeah, I started building a castle on top of a mountain.
Really, really fun, cool stuff. -It's the greatest. Not only do you act in this and -- was it Jared? -Jared Hess. -Jared Hess from -- -"Nacho Libre." -"Nacho Libre"! Dude, he's a great director, great writer. -He's my guy. -He wrote it, directed it. -And "Napoleon Dynamite." -And "Napoleon Dynamite," yeah, another -- another movie that you might have heard of.
It's so fun for the family. But not only is it you being super funny and Jason Momoa in action and colors and Minecraft, but there's also great music in this. -Yeah! -You and -- Dude, you put some original songs here. -I got some little nuggets. -Oh! -A sprinkling of musical nuggets and a big showstopper -- They wanted a song at the end of the movie that wraps up the whole -- I was like, "I can't do that." And then -- and they got the guys that wrote "I'm Just Ken" from "Barbie."
And I was like, "Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt?" -Yes! -And so we jammed on it and wrote it together and it's really -- -No, get ready for it! It's so good! -Ah! -Sit back and relax. I just went straight to work at "SNL," and I was just in my shorts, my florts and my, like, tie dye T-shirt. And I was like, "I can't wear this on Jimmy!" And then I didn't have time to go back to the hotel. Dude, life is a crazy whirlwind right now. -Life is a highway, man. I want to ride it all night long. Dude, that is -- what I'm talking about is this. Any time you're in the building, I don't care what you wear, you are always welcome at "The Tonight Show," my friend.
Anything! -Yeah? -But you look great. -You were, you were like, "Fine, dude, wear your florts, I don't care." -Whatever you want, dude. -Thank you. -You're always welcome here. Let's talk about "SNL." You're here in the building. -Yes! -"Saturday Night Live." It is Jack Black. It is Jack White. -Yes! -What?! -What a one-two punch.
-It's a one-two punch, but you're also joining the five-timers club. -Yes! -Jack! -Dude. -[Cheers and applause] -This is massive. -I know, it's crazy. -Ah! -It's so funny because, uh, it doesn't matter how many times you do "SNL," it doesn't lose its magic or its terrifying nature. -Yeah. -Like, I'm like a -- It's a high wire act. -Yeah. -And I can't help it. I'm like, part of my process is I have to be, like, certain that I'm going to blow it.
You know what I mean? -Yeah. -That's just, and that's what gets me motivated. -Yeah. But then you go out and you crush. -That's -- well, you know, you never know. -Yeah, you never know. No, no, but you and Jack White, did you know about that? When did you find out about this booking? -So, this is crazy. I got the call that I was going to be on "SNL." I didn't know who the musical guest was gonna be. And then I got a call from Jack White and he was like, "What do you think? Should we do this 'SNL' thing?"
I was like, "What are you talking about?" He's like, "Wait, they didn't tell you?" I was like, "No. You're gonna be the musical guest?" And he was like, "I'm thinking about it. Should we? I wanted to check with you first." I was like, "Hell yes, we should! Jack!" Because I've always secretly wanted to, like, party with Jack White 'cause I was like, "Wait a second. We're like the opposite sides of the Jack spectrum." -Yes! -It's like a no brainer, but it's never, we've never had the opportunity and we're going to finally mix it up.
-Yes! -Let's see what happens. It's exciting. -You've played with Jack before, right? On a project? -Well, we kinda did. -Yeah. -Like I have a band, Tenacious D. -Come on now. Kyle Gass! -And we were on tour one time and we were, we were headed to Nashville and Jack White slid into my DMs and said, "Hey, I noticed you're coming to Nashville. You want to come down and like, write a song and record a song over at my studio?"
I was like, "Hell yes, we're going to write a song and record a song." And it was like in three days. And I was like, "Dude, wait, we've gotta write a song." And, uh, and we were really, as you know, my process is I get really nervous and scared before everything. And I was like, let's write a song. I'm going to write a song about being terrified and nervous about going to write a song with Jack White.
-Brilliant. -And so we wrote this jam and it's called "Don't Blow It, Kage." Kage is my partner in Tenacious D. And we just went in there and it was a little bit of magic. -Yeah, yeah. And your fans are calling you guys together "Jack Gray." -Which is, yeah, that makes sense, 'cause if you combine black and white, it's gray, but I'm not crazy about that because gray is, it's kind of got a negative connotation. It's like it's the gray area. -Ooh. -You don't really know what it is.
I'd rather it was like Jack Silver or something. Or like Jack Zebra. Jack Stripes. -Jack Zebra! Jack Zebra is pretty good, bud, I love that. Let's talk about "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie." This movie is going to be huge, bud, congrats. -Yeah. -And you do great in this. The first Super Mario made over a billion.
-Yeah. -Billion yo. [Cheers and applause] Can you believe that? Dude, those are amazing words. -I know. -A billion. That's nuts. And then your song, "Peaches," by the way -- -Ah! -Was on the Billboard Hot 100! That was the best! That's what I'm talking about! That was the best. Dude, did you -- Is that exciting to have your song on the charts? -Yeah, I was really stoked that it went viral. as the kids say. -Yes.
-And, uh, it was a sweet little jam that just sort of came up organically while we were recording. We were like halfway through the process. We were like a year into recording Bowser voice and, and the writers and director was like, "We have an idea for maybe Bowser sings a song." And I was like, "Nah, that's a bad idea. I'm not gonna sing in this movie, guys. You didn't -- I didn't sign up for a musical." And then I was like, "Alright, let me hear what you got." And they sent it over and I was like, "This is funny.
We got to do this." And I'm really glad that they did because it's like a beautiful little nugget of joy in the middle of that movie. I was really stoked. -It was [sings] Peaches, Peaches. -Yeah, man, Bowser's got a soft side. He's a lover and a fighter. -Ooh. I love that. I remember I was playing it for my kids 'cause I was like, dude, you got to hear this. And they -- -♪ Peach ♪ ♪ You're so cool ♪ ♪ And with my star we're gonna rule ♪ ♪ Peach, understand ♪
Yeah. And we didn't rehearse it. I don't know if that's the right key. [Cheers and applause] -Have a little taste. -That's what I'm talking about. That's the magic. -I can't help it. -So I played it for my kids, and they already knew it. -They knew it? -That's when I knew it was a hit. They go, "Oh, Dad, this is 'Peaches, Peaches'." They knew the whole jam. And I was like, this guy's the best, man.
I'm so happy. I'm so -- you crushed it as Bowser. Uh, I think, though, I don't know if he got, uh, enough respect. -Well, you know, I mean, Bowser got a lot of love in the fans, the Nintendo fans, but I, thank you for bringing that up. -No problem. -Bowser did not get any attention or love from uh-uh-uh, the Academy. And I was like. "Dude, 'Peaches' is a banger."
Everyone's singing it. Your kids are singing it. -My kids are singing it. -I was like -- For a second, I was like, "I think we might get a nominash." - -And sure enough, we did not. It was a goose egg. -What?! And I even like campaigned for it a little bit. I'm not ashamed to say I was trying to get that nominash. -Yeah! -And, uh -- And then, not only did I not get my nominash, but my arch enemy, The Gos, Ryan Gosling.
-Oh! -.did get a nominash! And I was like, "Son of a biscuit. This Gosling always snacking on my potatoes." -Yeah! - -Now, look, I love "I'm Just Ken," love Barbie movie. -Yeah, of course, but. -But I can't pretend like there wasn't a little professional jealousy. -Yeah! -And then I wrote a song about how jealous Bowser was. Do you want to hear it? I'll just -- [Cheers and applause] It's really short.
-Yeah. -It's really short. Just imagine me in, like, a full Bowser costume right now. ♪ I can't believe I wasn't nominated ♪ ♪ Bowser shall have his revenge ♪ And that's the whole song. -Oh my God. [Cheers and applause] -That's really dumb. -That's so funny. ♪ Bowser shall have his revenge ♪ -It's very Bowser to be jealous. -Yeah, also, Ryan Gosling, too. -The Gos! One of the most likable dudes out there. Hey, here's the thing I love about Bowser.
He's scary. He's got a lot of power. -Yeah. -Great voice, by the way. He's voiced by a great, a great actor, but he's got transformed into Mini Bowser. -Oh, yes! -Awww! -Yes. So at the end of the first one, if you didn't see it, he gets shrunk down with the power of Mario's special techniques. And so we start off the new movie, "Galaxy," where he is still shrunken and kind of like in prison. They're keeping him captive. -Yeah.
-And, uh, yeah, he's kind of a sweet little guy. -Yeah. There's something kind of cute to him, yeah. -Yeah. -He's really adorable. -Well, he's also, like, humbled and kind of vulnerable because he's tiny now, and he doesn't have all his flame powers. And it was kind of, you see a different side of Bowser when he's tiny. -Uh, it's a great cast. It's super fun. I've been loving seeing all the press and you did a great thing for us.
You sang a song in Tokyo. -Dude, that was so fun. -Thank you for doing that, by the way. -Yeah. You sent out the power team. -Oh, yeah. The power team came out. -They flew out to Tokyo to say. -Oh, you crushed it, bud. -Did you have a hand in writing that song? -Ah, you never know. -I bet you did.
-Ah, I don't know. No, I don't know. -No, no, no. -That was fantastic. Thank you for doing that. And congrats on everything. And you're always game to do all the stuff. We love you.
