The Germans have really discovered something there. That's damn good! Hi everyone, I'm Uyen. Welcome to the YouTube channel. Today I'm going to show you a beautiful German tradition. Asparagus season! Germans cook asparagus in so many ways. I really want to try them all. In this video I'm doing a challenge that I've seen many times on YouTube. I'm going to eat nothing but asparagus dishes for a whole day, like a real German. Truly German. Let's go! What is the most popular asparagus dish in Germany? In my opinion, it's clearly asparagus with hollandaise sauce. First things first:
Germans prefer white asparagus to green. Today we're cooking mainly with white ingredients. Okay, now we'll cook it with salt, sugar, and butter. I've been making YouTube videos about unusual German food for years. There is plenty of material available for this. But when it comes to potatoes, the Germans have simply perfected every method of preparation. I have nothing but respect for that. For this recipe, we simply cook them.
Not very creative. To honor German efficiency, I'm making hollandaise sauce from a packet. Because nobody has time to make them themselves. Oh, look how creamy it is! I'm a little afraid of the verdict, as Germans take asparagus very seriously. But as a YouTuber, I know: You have to be brave and able to accept criticism. Let's go And here we have it! A delicious German asparagus dish. Okay, first of all: The asparagus is too soft. Much too soft. It's all just cooked, really. I don't know what I expected.
Not as good as in a restaurant. Quite disappointing. I give it 6 out of 10 points. The next dish confused me because I didn't know how to prepare it. Although I've eaten it many times before. It's asparagus cream soup. Let's get started First we need white asparagus. Then it is peeled as usual. But this time we'll keep the shells. Do n't throw away the leftovers, okay? Now we'll take all of them. What's it called? We'll use the shells to make broth. I don't really know why either. Germans are simply not wasteful.
Add a little salt and a little sugar. Two pieces of organic lemon. Add plenty of water and simmer for 15 minutes over medium heat. Did you know that there is an asparagus queen? Every year the farmers elect a queen. She attends events, appears on television, and promotes asparagus. What The Germans really know their stuff! Good gracious I don't know if that's enough. But that's all I have. This has to work.
You're going to get creamy now, do you hear? Guys, it's getting thick. That's good, that's good. Just a quick blend, I'll be right back. Okay, I've got it. I'm really hungry now. Guys, hire me. I'm so good at it. This is so damn delicious, oh my god. I don't usually react like that to my own food. I am usually very critical of my cooking skills.
The asparagus pieces are useless. Leave them out and puree everything. 10 out of 10 points! What's the strangest asparagus dish you've ever heard of? For me, it's asparagus ice cream. Is it extremely popular in Germany? No, but it exists. It's available for purchase and I want to try it out. We're making it ourselves today. You need milk, cream, sugar, and an expensive ice cream machine that costs €200. I bought them for today and future experiments. Most recipes on the internet say to use green asparagus. I am very skeptical because green asparagus has a very strong smell and taste. For scientific purposes, we are trying
both varieties. We have white and green asparagus. Let's test the consistency. It's incredibly soft. And it tastes like it shouldn't be in ice cream. mm-mm. You know what? I do it by feel. That will be fine. I'm not a big fan of measuring. In 80% of cases, this works for me. That's why I never measure anything. Until the 19th century, asparagus was a food for the elite in Germany because it was so difficult to grow. It only recently
became the country's most popular vegetable. A little lemon. I hope that helps. Now we'll freeze it. Put it in the freezer for 24 hours. I'm back. The ice cream is ready. It's rock hard. Do you hear that? All right then. Let's see. No, the green asparagus is. Maybe the white ice cream is better.
That's good! Creamy and delicate. I can eat that. Not the green ice. The white ice cream gets 9 out of 10 points. Really surprisingly good. I ate enough asparagus today to last me a whole week. I won't touch anything for the next seven days. Before digestion begins, a shout-out to my favorite German YouTube creators: Kurzgesagt, Pocket Hazel, Betel and Plankton.
