Testing the Highly Recommended L-Tek DDR Dance Pad After Years of Searching

After years of his wife requesting a DDR dance pad, the reviewer finally purchases an L-Tek pad from Poland, known for quality and availability. They unbox, set up, and test the pad with StepMania, encountering some registration issues but overall finding it a solid home arcade option. The video includes gameplay attempts, comparisons to arcade cabinets, and a discussion of the pad's build and software compatibility.

For years, my wife's been after me to buy a DDR dance pad, which, as you can see, I have not done. But why? I mean, it's great fun and even greater exercise, right? Well, yeah, but it's also a great big pain in the butt. Every time I've jumped down this rabbit hole, I've found more recommendations for what not to buy than solid advice about what's actually good. Now, there is one pad that everyone seems to agree is goatated, but as far as I can tell, that one is so rare that it might as well not even exist. But this time around, things actually went a little differently. Eltech, a Polish company, has developed a fine reputation for building DDR pads that are of acceptable quality, are

reasonably priced, and perhaps most importantly, are in stock. And it's here. You can put that down. Oh, thank you. Now, it did still cost a pretty penny, but with modern arcades charging a dollar or more for every few songs, this thing should pay for itself. Though, only time will tell if it ends up like our VR Beat Saber rig, which has seen hundreds of hours of play, or if it's going to be yet another Wii balance board. And only time will tell you this message from our sponsor, Cape. A while back, we did a video with Derek from Veritasium showing how somebody can take control of a phone number, allowing them to intercept calls and even steal two-factor authentication codes. Cape is a cell phone carrier that wants to fight

Admittedly, I didn't do a ton of research on this one. Is that all you got?

I forgot my knife. Oh, okay. One moment, please. So, if you didn't do a ton of research, how did you end up on the Eltech one? As far as I could tell, it was just the one if you didn't want like a floppy vinyl pad or if you didn't want a spring for like a decommissioned arcade cabinet or something like that with the full like bar and the whole deal. Got it. One of the big obstacles to me investing in one of these has been space. Not because I don't have somewhere that I could store it, but because I don't want to. DR pads kind of have the same problem as any other piece of exercise equipment like treadmills and exercise bikes where you get it thinking, "Oh yeah, it's

going to be part of my daily routine. I'm going to use it all the time." And then you don't and now you have to store it somewhere. But what I liked about this one is that whenever it's not in use, it's that thin. Oh, okay. I figured I could probably find somewhere to stash it that wouldn't be too in the way. U there wasn't really much included with it. Hey, that's it. I mean, there's a little box which says USB cable inside. Okay. And then this Matology, your dance journey begins today. Oh, nice. Is that a USBB cable? It looks like it. Yep. I mean, they're durable and clearly space wasn't a concern, but I guess that precludes us using an LT Truepec cable on it.

That's a not a very long cable for like a dance mat. I mean, I think it's probably going to assume you're putting it in a living room space near maybe your computer or even a console cuz it does say plug into any device. TM. Oh, wow. Using PlayStation. Yeah, it's got a picture of a PlayStation, a laptop, a computer, and I think that's an Xbox. That's pretty cool. You can wear your favorite shoes. Don't have one. We have They sell shoes. Special dancing shoes. What would Polish shoes be like? You know, I was really surprised that they were Polish. With a name like Eltech, you'd think they'd be Mexican. That got him so good. Anything get biffed in shipping? No. Looks like it's

in perfectly good shape. A little bite got taken out of it here. Okay. Now, have you looked into the software side of this at all? Because from my understanding, basically, Step Mania is the way to go, but there are alternatives just like you'd expect. Uh, Filthy Pirates, they love to have their favorite tracks from the official DDR machines, right? So, yeah, that's basically it. Step Maniao is one that's recommended. And then, of course, there's the variety. So, Yeah. Nice. Well, the variety of other software, whether it's Elden Ring or other dancing software. Should we read the instructions first, sir?

I guess. Okay. So, in the box, Matt cable user manual. Uh-huh. Is this the user manual? I'm assuming. Okay. Start. Select. Hey, nice little illuminated buttons there. Oh, and that's actually different modes. You can see which color. So, right now it's in dance pad mode. There's also a joyad mode, a keyboard mode, and a keyboard mode. What about second keyboard mode? Programming mode. Dude, can I program in Rust on my DDRP? I don't think that there's no way that's what it means, right?

Surely they mean programming which mode you're in. That makes more sense. Oh, so the different keyboard modes are literally just different keys. It's either Wazda or jilk. If you wanted to play two player, then this is a quick and easy way to bind it. Oh, that makes sense. Yeah, I think so. Seriously, sorry. I actually did see a mod online when I did a quick Google about these. Sometimes these pads can not quite register steps. There's literally a mod called a penny mod where you'll unscrew these, take two copper pennies, place them down, and then duct tape them. So, it helps with the contact surface

between the top pad and the actual bottom one. Okay. I don't know if we're going to need to do that. Yeah, I don't think either of us is going to need that, but maybe the kids. Okay. What do you mean? What? Wait, what is that supposed to mean? I mean, we're adults. Oh, the weight. Got it. Okay. Got to be careful. If you just put one hand up, you turn into Elon. Now, this is a little known fact, but our cameraman Shawn actually competes internationally in dance. Would you say that would give you an advantage in DDR?

No, not at all. No. I see. Stand on the pink arrows and then two finger hit the buttons. Oh, white lights will pulse. Oh, you just have to hold it for a while. But the No, no, now it's flashing. Okay. D Wads. Okay. Hold on. I could type a word. You have Oh, program crashed. Uh cra. Oh. Oh, it did not like whatever you just did. Uh oh. Hey, I was a little worried that this would go too quickly. Had to be too easy. What the Oh, did the lights just turn off?

The lights just turned off. That's not one of the profiles. Here, let's unplug and replplug. Oh my god. What is all this? I'm very overwhelmed. Holy cow. I have logged like 10 minutes of DDR in my entire life. Please don't judge me too harshly and go. Oh my god, this is like this is easy. Okay, hold on. Okay, down, left, right, left, right, down. Oh my god, this is Fine. You try. NO, SIR. GO AHEAD. IT'S going to be so much worse. Go ahead.

No, my legs hurt. Uh. Two combo. Too furious. That would be the hardest I've laughed in a long time. 124 missed. Dude, it says we got 1.48%. What does that even mean? Challenge time. Yeah. Who can fail the least? You want to go first or you want me to go first? I You know what? I'm going to let you go first. Okay. Cuz then I'm just going to try to copy. Okay. That was our warm-up. That was the warm-up round. You know what the problem is? Is the LACK OF MUSIC.

OH, I BET you that's it. That's what that song sounded like. We did not give that vibe off. Okay, here we go. Oh, no. You're practicing. That's so cheap. Yeah, I am. I'm I can promise I'm still bad. I think you're going to win, man. I don't think so. I can tell you right now that was a professional in that wouldn't work. That was great. You know what? I think you won. Good job. We can uh end the video here. Wrap it up.

Do you want your shoes? No. I feel more confident without the shoes. Okay. Cuz then I can slide from pad to pad. Why are you standing so close to me? I feel unnecessary pressure. Oh. Oh, that was early. Oh my god. I have I'm too white for this. He's already at a quarter of my score almost. Oh, actually he's not going up anymore, though. I look so uncomfortable. Dude, you laugh. I'm hitting more now. I love how it judges you at the end. Your timing difficulty was four and your life difficulty was four.

Thank you. How did you get 178,000 and I got 38,000? Let us know down below who you thought was better at dancing. We're going to go based off audience score on this one. You know what though? As much as we were like having issues with it, it was genuinely pretty fun. Yeah, it's pretty fun. And realistically, this isn't for me. This is actually a surprise birthday present for my son. Oh, okay. Cool. Yeah, but that my wife wants more than he does. This is where Sean's going to absolutely destroy. Oh, dude. He's already got the technique going.

How are you at 480,000? How do you get so off on this? Half a millie points, dude. Sean slayed us. But like, wait, his numbers aren't even that off. Yeah, he's not even that much better than us. I did notice when he was playing that he got like half a million in the first like 20 30 seconds. So it's like what you were doing where you were like going to the moon and then it just well thank you. Gravity kicked in, you know. Yeah. So I don't know if it's some sort of like scaled system or if it starts averaging it out, but another thing I noticed when Sean was playing, he was definitely hitting the notes and it was definitely not registering. And

there was also times where he was not hitting the notes and it was registering. I um I'm not going to pretend that was my issue. That was clearly what happened with me, though. Sure. Have you ever tried DDR before? I've tried it once, but I'm really bad at it. I doubt you'll be much worse than us. Okay. I don't feel this bad. Well, she's not even trying. Come on, do your best. You got this. We can't just keep hitting the one button.

Okay, it's hard. It seems like it's just hard. It has nothing to do with the better malleability of child brains. Mom's good at it. I doubt that. Okay, this may be borderline TMI, but I'd always tell Ivonne, you know, I liked her long legs. And she'd be like, "Oh, yeah, like, you know, like a gazelle." I'd be No, like a giraffe. That's a good one. It's amazing she married me. Yeah. The more I hear about you two, I'm like, "Oh, wow. I wouldn't have." While we're waiting for Ivon to try it out, show us how it's done. You know, thought maybe we'll pull this off and have a look at the construction of this

thing. What are we getting for like hundreds of dollars? Yep. Nice. Got it. Okay. Well, I'm glad I didn't pay more for it. Literally just got the hot glue. Like, so I'm trying to figure out what the contact point is. Is there another Oh, yeah. Okay, I see it. Yeah, there's another contact plate under this giant silver one that I just sliced my finger on. Please be very careful. My lady, as requested, a Dance Revolution mat. I don't think I've played Dance Revolution before. Like, not properly. Anyway, why did you want a DDR pad?

Cuz it looked fun. Every time we go to Castle Fun Park, it's always busy and it's for the kids. It's not for me. It's something for them to do with their friends. You've been asking for it forever. You said you told me you wanted it. I said it looked fun. Okay, then have fun. Well, I'm not having fun now. I didn't know that. All right. You ready to show us how it's done? No, I just said I don't play. What do I do? Uh, well, when the arrow comes, you step on the It's fast. I am not doing this right. Oh my goodness. No, this is really fast.

Okay. Well, that answers that question for us. Oh, shoot. Your daughter was convinced you were very good. Why? We said the same thing. Okay. For what it's worth, we did not do any better than you. Okay, good. We're just making fun of you because it makes us feel better about ourselves. We were like just as bad. And this is easy. I don't understand that. That did not look easy. All right, Mr. Athletic. I'm not going to lie, it's like pretty hard.

165 misses. Yeah, that's a fail. That's a fail, Dad. I'd be careful about trash talking too much because Yeah. Oh, boy. It is that hard. Oh. Oh, boy. Hopefully by the next time this thing is featured on camera, we're all going to be a lot better at it, just like I'll be better at telling you about our sponsor, Cape. Cape is a mobile carrier that provides unlimited call, text, and data, and says they are built from the ground up with privacy and security in mind. This includes features like network lock, which protects people from signaling attacks. Because even with security measures like multiffactor authentication, there are still

vulnerabilities in places that you might not expect, like your cellular network. Network lock works by using a signaling proxy to verify that your devices physical location actually matches the network that it's trying to attach to. If the network sending the attach request doesn't match your devices physical location, they automatically block the connection. For most signaling attacks, all the attacker needs to get started is your phone number. But if they gain access to your IMSI, they can even do things like track your current location. That's why Cape uses something called identifier rotation, which changes your IMSI every 24 hours so you look like a different subscriber to the

network every day, making it harder for you to be tracked. So, if you want to learn more or try them out, you can go to cape.co/linus techtips and use code LTT to save 33% on your first 6 months. If you guys enjoyed this video cuz you just love that Linus and Elijah doing stuff energy, why not check out the time we built the world's most difficult PC.
