A warm welcome in the Turkish capital for the Algerian president. Relations now on a more formal footing with a high-level cooperation council and a key partnership in the field of energy. The war in our region which began as a result of Israel's provocations is having a particularly negative impact on energy markets. As Turkey, we established and developed reliable, sustainable partnerships with Algeria many years ago. At this stage, we are advancing our long-term cooperation regarding energy supply security, particularly in the field of natural gas. Algeria has become an important alternative source of gas for the region, not just for Turkey which had already been diversifying before the
current crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, but also parts of Europe looking for alternatives since the start of the war in Ukraine. For Algeria, there's a considerable Turkish presence there in terms of construction and mining. The partnership accelerated by the current president since he took office in 2019. 14 agreements signed this time, including trade and technology. We are pleased to see an increasing momentum in our relationship. We have made significant strides in a short space of time to reach this level, particularly over the last 5 years.
During this visit, we aim to diversify our relations in the economic sphere, ensure our partnership is supported across different sectors, and safeguard our shared historical heritage. And the Order of State presented to the Algerian president, the highest honor from the Turkish state to foreign leaders as a mark of friendship. And a similar award, the Athir Order of Merit, for Recep Tayyip Erdogan in return. While relations between Turkey and Algeria haven't been poor in recent years, the election of Abdelmadjid Tebboune to office has pushed them to a much higher level. There's more convergence on foreign policy, support for Palestinian solidarity, criticism of the attacks on Iran, and a desire to bring the two conflicting parties
together in Libya. Andrew Hopkins, TRT World, Ankara.
