Building a Larger Pond Enclosure for Turtles at Kamp Kenan

Kenan upgrades the pond enclosure at Kamp Kenan, digging a trench and installing fencing to create a larger, safer habitat for turtles and tortoises. He uses repurposed materials like telephone poles and bamboo, and plans to add plants and pathways. The video also features updates on the animals, including a healthy check on Phantom the tortoise.

Little big doings today, people. I'm motivated and we are going to get to work. We've got the materials that you guys helped me out with a few months ago when we were getting the box turtles. I have some extra ones and it's going to really come into play because we're going to go around this pond and we are going to set up a fence just on the other side of the shoreline here of the big pond so we can keep all those turtles into that area. Uh it's going to be really cool. It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm going to get it done. First things first,

we're going to get on the L47 and we're going to dig a trench. So, let's do that right now. Thank you to all our loyal Patreon members out there who have helped to create an amazing reptile community online with us this Big shout out goes to John Phillips. Oh, how I love this machine. Okay, so here's the trench. It goes all the way to where the sculcatas are and comes all the way around here. Now, let me tell you, getting through these roots, oh,

a little challenging, but nothing the L47 couldn't handle. A lot better than me doing it by hand. I can tell you that much. I'm going to have to trim back these roots when we put our wire down. But the next thing we're going to do, my friends, is we are going to start putting our posts in. Now, I dug down because obviously you want to keep the turtles from digging out under the fence. So, we're going to counter synink the wire into the ground a wee bit. This will keep them from being able to dig out. The fence itself is only going to be about 24 in tall,

so it's really not that high. We've got plenty of repurposed telephone pole that'll go in. Um, we're going to use that as fence posts. I also have some thin fence post. So, it'll go thick, thin, thin, thin, thick, thin, thin, thin. We'll just spread it out because waist knot, want not. Okay, turtle farmers, you got to make do with what you've been squirreling away for many years. So, we're keeping cost low on this one. But, uh, I'm excited because it'll give it a really cool look. And then eventually, what I'd like to do is maybe cut down some bamboo and use that as a top railing

across this thing. So again, it's going to be nice to have the turtles all contained in here instead of walking around this whole area. Once I have them contained, I'll be able to open this up. So it'll be a really nice flow throughout the entire property. And then what I would also do is open up the fence on that side. And the possibilities are really cool because we can allow the sculcatas to wander all through here during the dry season. They'll keep the grass mode. It gives them much more room to move. Uh they do their job. And then maybe I'll have a fence or a gate here. And then

on this side, I do have some plans. You see all those weeds growing in between our beautiful uh foliage that we planted. Well, I was talking to uh some of the friends I have, and there may be a need to house some radiated tortoises. Um and they could be my little yard crew back here. So, we'll just keep that on tap for a potential. So, okay, I am going to start uh digging fence posts and uh we're going to do that next. So, how exciting for me. Yay, digging. I should have got a fence post digger from K Cabota. No worries. We'll get it done. All right, guys. See you in a minute.

Heat. Hey, Hey. Okay, so it's been a few days and I've been working, been doing a lot. Let me show you what I got going. All right, we have the fence up. It's not 100% done, but it is working. It is a containment barrier. Doesn't look great right now. We're going to cut down some bamboo and I'm going to put some bamboo railings on it and then we'll get some pickets. Uh but I have raked

it out. We've got a nice beach here where the turtles like that grandest, they can come out. There's another grandis right there. They can kind of wander around. We'll probably put some kind of netting up to keep the crows from eating the eggs. But this is where a lot of the turtles are going to wind up laying their eggs. And then now I'm happy because this area is uh turtle free. So we're trying to keep them contained so they can lay their eggs in this area. But I just used some old posts and poles and things that I had laying around. And we made this barrier and it goes all

the way around to where I started from. But I like this better because now we're gonna be able to landscape this a bit. Maybe let the sculcatas roam through here. Okay. I can just open that up and the sculcatas can wander all the way through here. And uh like I said, I'll just be making, you know, areas where they can eat. There'll be grass here. But man, how cool is that? It goes all the way around. So, it's a huge enclosure and I plan on having a nice little pathway with some nice plants. We can just meander through it. I was making retaining wall here. Not quite done.

I'll fix this up. But yeah, I figured fill that in with some soil. Get a nice big bamboo to take up that whole space. Trim some of these palm trees. I think it'd be pretty cool. So, I'm just happy now because we have this fence up and it's going to keep the turtles closer to the pond and yeah, that's going to be a really cool little area. So, now this is all open and it'll be a totally cool flow to the camp. There'll be a nice kind of natural flow throughout the whole place. All right. Well, there you go. I'll uh probably trim these down a bit. You know,

get the bamboo. There's always work to do. So, I'm going to keep at it. See you in a bit. Okay. Well, it's nice having bamboo in your yard. This is Guada bamboo. It's actually construction grade bamboo. They grow it in South America and use it for various construction needs as a material. Uh, I got to clean this up and then I'm going to run some of these poles over to the pond and see if we can use them as a railing. Cool thing about this bamboo is obviously it's

a grass and it is highly renewable. So, this uh lumber will last a while without any treatment. You can treat bamboo and it'll last even longer, but I'm not worried. I'm just going to throw it up on the turtle fence uh as a form of rustic decoration and something to put the top part of the wire onto. Uh I think it'll look good. We'll see how it looks. I still have plenty more. We have some giant bamboo. I can take the seabbze bamboo uh and it'll work just fine in that application. Now, as for this, I'm going to have to clean this up. So,

I think I'll get to that right now. Uh I like to clean as I go, so let's do just that. I don't Okay, it is starting to come together, people. Uh, I'm digging this. And to be perfectly honest, what I'm going to do is I'm going to wind up going all the way around. And this is just bamboo right from

my house. Pretty exciting. Hey, look. It's the windmill. Um, what I'm going to do is I'm going to continue to roll bamboo. Just kind of line it down. And, uh, it'll be like a bamboo wall. We're not going to do those vertical pickets. I actually saw something on Facebook. Uh, I think they're in Thailand, Tort Park. I don't know. They're on Facebook. They have big alabers and I just saw they live in an area with a lot of bamboo and their fences are literally just bamboo strapped or screwed into vertical posts. So, I'm just going to run this all the way around. And it's a cheap,

durable material that when it eventually rots out, by that time I'll have more and I'll just put it up. And it looks cool, especially when you're standing on the other side of the pond. So, I'm real happy with the way this is looking. We're going to just continue to put pole after pole um horizontally and uh I think this will be a really cool barrier. We have this kind of ledge to where the tortoises are going to turtles will come in. They can't climb over it because this is kind of a bit of an overhang. And then once I get the other uh horizontal beams or rods in place, I'm going to

staple the wire to the backs of it. So that'll firm up the wire. But really nice little beach here for the turtles to lay their eggs. And that's what's been happening. I've also been noticing a lot of crows and they're getting a lot of the slider eggs. You see the crows will dig these up. But what I can do now since I've actually created a smaller area to uh have the eggs in. I can run some deer uh bird net over it. I'll put some posts here and then I'll just have the netting over top so we can kind of save as many eggs as possible. uh which I think is really cool. Here's a grandis.

But now this is going to make getting the eggs from these pond turtles a whole heck of a lot easier than it has been in the past. And um that's important to me. So, you know, this uh this video, you know, you've been seeing this over the course of the last few days. It's actually taken me about a week to get to this point. Um, there's just so much that I have to do at the camp that I can't just, you know, focus on one thing. But look at from here. I kind of like it. I like the way it looks. So once you see more bamboo, it'll be like a cool bamboo wall. Very skull

island if you know what I'm talking about. Uh, you know, hopefully you guys are watching Monarch uh on Apple cuz I love me some monster movies. And so we'll skull island this place out and the turtles will stay in here. Uh the pond is filling up. I like these stairs to the green. Beautiful pond. When you dream and green, my friends and uh yeah, I'm pretty pumped. Uh but it's so warm and nice. And look at all the red foots out. They're mowing. They're just doing their thing. I love seeing these guys out here again. It's a nice little springtime. Um I guess

what do they call that? You know, what is it? It's a Oh my gosh. I might have a brain fade right here in front of you guys. How embarrassing. Um, what do you call it? It's a Hey, look at this. Here's something interesting. I don't mind a little redfoot taking a little walk through the wetland. That's okay with me. It seems they go into the big pond. I get nervous. And I see some ripples. Let's see what's going on. Everyone is out and about. What's going on over here? I do see some ripples. It was just from the fish. You gota You do have to keep an eye on these guys because I did have uh an

instance where a red foot did kind of get in here. Um and I had to rescue it. Um but by and large they're pretty smart. They stay away from the deep water, but they are being uh very active in mowing down a lot of our food. See, this one's come right up to the ledge. has decided to turn back. Smart lady. I like it. Let's go over here now. Curly tails. What up, Curly? Uh, let's see what this one's going to do. This one's actually still eating here. I'll let it do its thing. Not bothering me. It's safe here. So, there you go. All right. Now, back to what I was trying to think

of. It's a tradition. Duh. That's it. that it's a springtime tradition to let the creatures come on out. Let the red foots come on into the back area. I mean, there's so much lust lush foliage that it is. Look at this. All the hibiscus from this got nibbled away. It's a buffet. What can I say? I love it. That's why the animals are here. It's about them. Hey, you climbing a coconut. What's up? You trying to climb that coconut palm? I don't know. This is the dream. Okay. Basically, the dream is to walk around your property and have tortoises living in peace in the habitat. I

think, you know, to be perfectly honest, that's what it's all about. So, very, very excited. I'm going to show you some of the other work that I've gotten done here. Uh, we did do, you know, you got to keep the yard trimmed up. We've been weed whacking. We've been mowing. So, the place is looking good. trimming back some of the dead foliage from when it wound up getting too cold here. But I am really thinking now that this needs to be fenced in so that we can have tortoises living up here. Um, I had to weed whack all of these little vines that grew. But the tortois

really love eating this stuff. So, you know what? I'm just going to put them to work. Let's get the tortoises to work. Let's Let's just do it. Um, I mean, all the green stuff is food, friends. We're turning this into a tortoise paradise. We ain't even done yet. We got more to do. Let's see. There's There's Chase right there. All right. And Lulu, he's moving about because he sees the slingster. He actually sees Slinky over here and he wants to get at Slinky. Turns out croc monitors don't want to share habitat with any other monitor lizard. He would love to get after Slinky and I

definitely don't want to see that fight. Slinky being the old man that he is. Hey Bub being the old man he is ain't moving as fast as he used to, but he's still looking good. He's got good weight. Just a little bit slower. So, you know what? We'll cater to the man. After all, he's been here for a long time making sure you guys are entertained and educated. He's amazing. What an ambassador we have for this channel. Okay, again, lots going on. Lots has been done. Lots of weed whacking. Lots of yard work. Lots of kabotas in action. Love them kabotas. There's my stepdaughter

doing her job. What a kid. We love her. All right. She's feeding some animals, helping out her uh evil stepfather. And uh what do you know? Last thing I want to show you guys on this video, since we've done so much work, this one's kind of taken a few days to accomplish. I want to go ahead and show you our buddy Phantom. We Oh, I forgot. I've been letting a mud wallow develop here. We're going to shut off this. So, we've got a nice mud wallow for our friend. The gops love to soak in the mud. So, I created one. But our buddy. Hey, dude. Hey, buddy. He's doing so much better.

He's so much different. Hey, come on out, bud. Come on out. Come show everyone. He's actually due to get another injection in just a little while here today. But there he is. Phantom doing awesome. And guess what? The tests have come back negative. Does not have tink. So that is a huge, huge sigh of relief for me. Um, but there he is poking his head out, looking for a scratch maybe. Yeah, that's my man. That's how we do it. That's how you know he's feeling much better is he's responding to me. He is doing his normal phantom behavior and so this is just a fantastic

update that I wanted to share with you guys in today's video. So, we've got a lot of work done. We have got healthy animals. That's the best part is everyone's healthy at this moment. We're back to normal here at the camp. And when that's done, when work is done and animals are healthy, I'm happy. All right, everyone. Thanks so much for watching, watching me build. I know you guys love build videos. Uh maybe it'll give you some ideas. Uh if you live in an area where you can grow bamboo, just cut it down, strap it on a pole, and you got yourself a fence. Here comes

Socrates. She's coming over. Oh boy. Anyway, don't forget to go to patreon.com/camken. help support the channel and I'll see you guys again real soon on another video. So long.
